Is knob and tube wiring safe?

Knob and tube wiring is a very old and outdated method of wiring a home or building.  It has its limitations being that many of the items we use today that need electricity draw a lot more power than the things they had when the initial install happened.  This puts a larger load on the system which can cause problems with splices and/or the conductors themselves.  If you have any concerns about your electrical wiring contact us and we would be happy to come out and take a look for you.

What is knob and tube wiring?

Knob and tube wiring was a method used to wire electricity in homes and buildings built before 1950.  It consists of single conductors/wires, that travel through your home tied to insulators/knobs, and penetrating studs through tubes. You can typically tell if you have knob and tube wiring by looking in your attic or basement to see it.

What are the circuit breakers in my electrical panel with the buttons on them?

The breakers in your electrical panel with the buttons on them are one of two things. They are either arc fault circuit breakers or ground fault circuit breakers, or possibly a combination of the two.

My outlet doesn’t work, what do I do?

Your first stop when your outlet has quit working is going to be your electrical panel.  Check for any tripped breakers and if one is found, reset it and check the outlet to see if power has been restored.  If everything looks good here, check around for any GFCI or AFCI receptacles that may have tripped and need to be reset.  Simple press the reset button all the way in to ensure they are ok and functioning properly.  If neither of these two items solves your problem contact us to come out and get you back up and running.

Can I replace a light fixture with a ceiling fan?

Removing a light fixture and replacing it with a ceiling fan is a bad idea.  The weight and movement of a ceiling fan is too much for a simple lighting box, therefore you run the risk of the box failing and your beautiful new ceiling fan crashing to the ground.  It is best to replace that ceiling box with one that is rated to support the weight of a ceiling fan.

How long do electrical repairs generally take?

The duration to complete electrical repairs depends of the size of the project.  A simple switch replacement might take less than an hour, whereas replacement of your electrical panel will take a whole day. We will do our best to let you know before we begin any work on your home or business the approximate time it will take to finish up. We hate to have our customers be inconvenienced any longer than they need to be.

How do I hire an electrician?

When hiring an electrician please do some homework on them.  Check their licensing status to make sure they are current.  Go online and check reviews, or referrals.  Ask questions!  We step a little more indepth in this subject in a blog post you can find here: http://www.hbelectricsolutions.com/blog

How do I find and reset a tripped breaker in my electrical panel?

When you open the door to your electrical panel all of the breakers should be in the on position with their handles towards the center of the electrical panel.  Look for a breaker that the handle is in a different position.  Some breakers will trip into the middle position, some will trip into the off position.  Some circuit breakers will have a small window on them that when they trip an orange or red indicator can be seen, making it easy to identify where your problem is.  Once the breaker is located, turn it into the full off position.  It should click into place.  Once this happens the breaker can be turned into the on position again, restoring power.  If the circuit breaker trips there is an issue with that circuit somewhere and it would be best to call HB Electric Solutions at 253-256-7861 and we will come out and solve your problem.

What should I do if I lose electricity to part of my home or business?

If you lose electricity to part of your home or business, first check your electrical panel.  Look for any tripped breakers inside your electrical panel. If you are in a larger commercial building you may have multiple panels to look in.  To determine a tripped breaker, look for one that is in the middle position, or one that has orange or red in the small viewing window on it. If everything looks good there, my recommendation would be to look around for a GFCI receptacle that may have tripped.  GFCI receptacles are the ones with the little buttons in the middle.  They will typically be in garages, kitchens, bathrooms, outdoors, and laundry areas.  Ensure the reset button is fully pushed in.  When these troubleshooting techniques have been exhausted and you still are missing power to part of your home or business give us a call and we will come out as soon as we can to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair your issue.  Most of these problems can be taken care of in the first hour of a service call.

What should I do if I lose electricity?

The best thing to do if you have lost electricity to your home or business would be to check your main circuit breaker first to ensure it hasn’t tripped.  Once that has been determined to not be the problem at hand, I would suggest calling your local power company to see if there is an outage in your area.  Usually they are able to let you know over the phone if they are experiencing problems over the phone, and if not they will send someone out to take a look at your incoming power and let you know what they find.  If they are not able to solve your problem, give us a call and we will send someone out as quickly as we can to try and get you back up and running.
